Together towards a carbon neutral future – EWE and their evolving cleantech startups

The Oldenburg-based utility has pledged to become carbon-neutral by 2035, and is investing €7 billion to achieve this goal. To accelerate the process, the French Ardian joined as strategic investor in December 2019.

EWE is not only setting a green course internally, but invests in cleantech startups as well. With investments in EIGENSONNE, Bullfinch and Solytic, EWE is actively involved in the solar PV value chain. EIGENSONNE provides planning and construction of solar PV plants, while Bullfinsh handles financing. After the setup, Solytic offers software for an automated smooth operation over the lifetime of about 25 years.

More and more households are installing photovoltaic systems. Germany is about to hit 2 million connected units in total. Electricity customers are transforming from consumers to prosumers with new needs. EWE is supporting their transition and redefines its own role to switch from “supplier to care taker”.  As Technology Chairman of EWE, Dr. Urban Keussen, says, the utility is set to achieve this by thoroughly digitalizing their products and services. Ultimately, customers will no longer have to worry about their green electricity production and supply, but simply and conveniently let EWE and its partner companies look after it, without having to become solar PV experts.
